2008 Central Indiana USSSA Slugfest


Fly Boys open season in Indy at Central Indian Slugfest The 2008 Fly Boys team opened the season with a trip to Indianapolis, Indiana to take part in the Central Indiana USSSA Slugfest. The Fly Boys finished the tournament with a 1-3 mark, while gaining some valuable experience. Listed below is a brief recap of each game.

GAME #1 Fly Boys vs. Cincinnati Stix
STIX 9, FLY BOYS 0

The Stix jumped in front with a 6 run first inning to grab control of the game. Meanwhile the Fly Boys bats were silent for the most part, and unable to mount any offense. Vayden Wood collected a single to pace the Fly Boys limited offense.

GAME #2 Fly Boys vs. Smithville Sluggers
FLY BOYS 6, SLUGGERS 5

The Fly Boys picked up their first win of the season behind the pitching work of starter Butch Baird who tossed a complete game effort. Baird had some control problems allowing 11 walks, but also tallied 11 strikeouts in picking up his first win of the season.
At the plate, Anthony Frank singled twice with an RBI while Vayden Wood and Adam Hershberger each laced an RBI double. Maverick Sales and Alex Weikart each added singles.

GAME #3 Fly Boys vs. Cincinnati Stix
STIX 10, FLY BOYS 4

In a rematch with the Stix, the Fly Boys fared better but were still unable to pick up the win. Most of the Stix damage came with a 2-run second inning followed by a 3-run third frame. A third inning 3-run inning by the Fly Boys closed the gap to 8-4 but that was as close as the Fly Boys could come.
Adam Hershberger and Anthony Frank each banged out a pair of singles while Alex Weikart stroked a RBI double. Maverick Sales chipped in with a basehit.

GAME #4 Fly Boys vs. Indiana Irish
IRISH 5, FLY BOYS 2

The Fly Boys seemed in control, leading 2-1 heading into the sixth inning. But the Irish mounted a 4-run rally in the sixth to grab the led and hold on for the win.
Adam Hershberger again swung a hot bat for the Fly Boys with a triple, double with a pair of RBIs while Butch Baird smacked a double. Andrew Robbins and Maverick Sales each singled.
